The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer
Wow. What can I say? This book is nothing like I've read before, and I've read a lot.
The main theme of the story is revealed in the first chapter, in fact, it's in the blurb.
"I'll tell you what happened because it will be a good way to introduce you to my brother. His name's Simon. I think you're going to like him. I really do. But in a couple of pages he'll be dead. And he was never the same after that."
The author doesn't reveal all straight away, the reader is kept in suspense for pretty much the entire book, with little snippets of info here and there.
So, what did I like about this book? The language is simple, nothing too complicated. No extrinsic sentences that leave you confused, wondering what he's on about. The story is amazing..without going into detail and leaving spoilers, the book is written in such a way, that its easy to feel like you are a part of this story..what the main character feels, you feel. There are a lot of repeated sentences, but in a way, they need to be there. They remind you that for this character, it was real and it makes it real for you too. There were a few times when I welled up, my heart broke, and I laughed along with the outrageous anecdotes. The only downside to this story for me, is that there is a lot of jumping around with the timeline. It's obviously necessary for the story, but it's sometimes difficult to realise when you have jumped from present tense to past tense, and which past tense exactly is it..2 years ago or 10 years ago..but if you can get to grips with that, then you will really enjoy this book. It's definitely on my recommended list.
For my first ever book review, I'm going to give The Shock of the Fall a solid 4 stars! ★★★★☆
